Byron Buxton
Byron Buxton No lingering injuries
Mon, Jan 27, 2025, 11:30 PM
Buxton is feeling "as good as he's felt in a lot of years," general manager Derek Falvey said at Saturday's TwinsFest, Matthew Leach of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Unlike last year when Buxton had offseason knee surgery and had finished the previous season with a hamstring issue, Buxton entered the offseason relatively healthy and doesn't have a major rehab entering spring training. It's not quite "best shape of his life" territory for Buxton, but it's as good as we're going to get at this stage of his career.
Brock Stewart
Brock Stewart Expects to be ready for Opening Day
Mon, Jan 27, 2025, 4:37 AM
Although Stewart (shoulder) has thrown three bullpen sessions in the last month and expects to be ready for Opening Day, he will be built up slower than the rest of the pitchers as a precaution this spring, Phil Miller of the Minnesota Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: Stewart underwent season-ending arthroscopic right shoulder surgery in August, and his initial recovery timeline was 5-to-6 months. He's been a lockdown reliever for Minnesota when healthy, collecting a 0.66 ERA and 56:17 K:BB through his first 41 innings with the Twins in 2023 and early 2024. However, he hurt his shoulder in May of last year and wasn't the same pitcher thereafter. If healthy and back to his prior form, he'd be a top setup option in the bullpen.
Joe Ryan
Joe Ryan Throwing bullpen sessions
Mon, Jan 27, 2025, 4:31 AM
Ryan had an MRI in November that showed a "complete resolution" of the shoulder strain that ended his 2024 season in August, Phil Miller of the Minnesota Star Tribune reports. He's thrown three bullpen sessions this winter.
Analysis: Ryan suffered a Grade 2 teres major strain during a start Aug. 9 and missed the rest of the regular season. With a clean bill of health in the offseason, he is expected to be ready for the start of spring training. He'll return to work at the top of the Minnesota rotation after going 7-7 with a 3.60 ERA and 9.8 K/9 in 23 starts last season.
Carlos Correa
Carlos Correa Ready for camp
Sun, Jan 26, 2025, 4:51 PM
Correa declared himself ready for spring training Saturday after spending the first part of the offseason rehabbing from plantar fasciitis in his right foot, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: The 30-year-old played through the injury during the final weeks of the regular season, but he indicated his recovery and rehab this winter was "more natural" than the previous offseason, when he was working back from plantar fasciitis in his left foot. Correa had a .905 OPS in 2024 but was limited to 86 games due to the injury, and his durability remains a concern heading into 2025.
Pablo Lopez
Pablo Lopez Named Opening Day starter
Wed, Jan 22, 2025, 5:05 PM
Twins manager Rocco Baldelli named Lopez the team's Opening Day starter Wednesday, Bobby Nightengale of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: It's pretty early to be naming an Opening Day starter, but Baldelli chose to let the cat out of the bag during an interview on the Inside Twins podcast. Lopez had a relatively disappointing 2024, going 15-10 while posting a 4.08 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 198:41 K:BB over 185.1 innings. His xERA was 3.67, however, and he posted a 2.77 mark in 13 second-half starts.
Anthony Misiewicz
Anthony Misiewicz Finds work with Minnesota
Sat, Jan 18, 2025, 4:33 PM
Misiewicz signed a minor-league contract with the Twins on Saturday that includes an invitation to spring training, Darren Wolfson of Channel 5 Saint Paul reports.
Analysis: Misiewicz appeared in just one game for the Yankees last season while spending most of the year in Triple-A, where he finished with a 3.90 ERA and 1.29 WHIP over 55.1 innings. He'll attempt to win a spot in the Twins' bullpen during spring training, but there's a better chance he begins the year with Triple-A St. Paul.
Josh Winder
Josh Winder Building up slowly in camp
Wed, Feb 14, 2024, 2:12 PM
Winder is behind the Twins' other pitchers for the start of spring training while he builds back up from a right scapula stress fracture he suffered late in the 2023 season, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Winder wasn't placed on the injured list at any point due to the stress fracture, which wasn't detected until he underwent an MRI in October, per Park. After taking some extra time to rest up during the offseason, Winder seems to have moved past the injury, but he was still limited to playing catch from 90 feet at Wednesday's workout while most other Twins relievers threw bullpen or live sessions.
Josh Staumont
Josh Staumont Considered 100 percent
Wed, Feb 14, 2024, 8:47 AM
Staumont (shoulder) will not be under any restrictions at the start of spring training, Bobby Nightengale of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: Staumont underwent thoracic outlet syndrome surgery in July but told reporters Wednesday that he's been throwing for months. It's an operation that is notoriously difficult to come back from. Staumont has posted a 6.09 ERA over 63 appearances since the start of the 2022 season.
Anthony DeSclafani
Anthony DeSclafani Fully healthy entering spring
Wed, Feb 14, 2024, 8:43 AM
DeSclafani (elbow) is considered fully healthy at the start of spring training, Bobby Nightengale of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: DeSclafani was limited to 19 starts in 2023 due to a right flexor strain but told reporters Wednesday that he's been throwing for months. The veteran right-hander was acquired via trade last month and is competing to be the Twins' fifth starter.
Daniel Duarte
Daniel Duarte Sent to Triple-A
Tue, Feb 13, 2024, 1:19 PM
Duarte cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A St. Paul on Tuesday, Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Duarte was designated for assignment by Minnesota last week but will stick around the organization and also attend big-league spring training. The right-hander appeared in 31 games for the Reds last season and had a 3.69 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 23:20 K:BB over 31.2 innings.
Brian O'Keefe
Brian O'Keefe In Twins camp
Tue, Feb 13, 2024, 1:18 PM
O'Keefe signed a minor-league contract with the Twins on Tuesday that includes an invitation to spring training.
Analysis: O'Keefe saw spot duty with the Mariners each of the previous two seasons, going 3-for-22 at the plate. The 30-year-old will provide the Twins with some catching depth at Triple-A St. Paul.
Jeff Brigham
Jeff Brigham Gets MiLB deal from Minnesota
Tue, Feb 13, 2024, 1:14 PM
Brigham signed a minor-league contract with the Twins on Tuesday that includes an invitation to spring training.
Analysis: Brigham, 32, collected a 5.26 ERA and 42:18 K:BB over 37.2 frames with the Mets last season. The veteran right-hander has managed a 4.76 ERA over 117.1 innings at the big-league level but has also fanned 121 batters.
Jordan Balazovic
Jordan Balazovic Outrighted to Triple-A
Tue, Feb 13, 2024, 12:47 PM
Balazovic cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A St. Paul by the Twins on Tuesday, Darren Wolfson of Channel 5 Saint Paul reports.
Analysis: While no longer on the 40-man roster, Balazovic will remain in the organization and join the Twins in camp this spring as a non-roster invitee. The right-hander posted a 4.44 ERA and 17:14 K:BB over 24.1 relief innings with Minnesota in 2023.
Jared Solomon
Jared Solomon Latches on with Minnesota
Mon, Feb 12, 2024, 9:36 AM
Solomon signed a minor-league contract with the Twins on Jan. 17.
Analysis: Solomon spent all of 2023 at Triple-A Louisville in the Reds organization, putting up a ghastly 10.29 ERA and 22:28 K:BB over 28 innings. He made nine relief appearances with Cincinnati in 2022, yielding 10 runs over 8.1 frames.
Steven Okert
Steven Okert Headed to Minnesota
Sun, Feb 11, 2024, 12:48 PM
The Twins acquired Okert from the Marlins on Sunday in exchange for utility player Nick Gordon, Craig Mish of the Miami Herald reports.
Analysis: Okert spent the last three seasons in Miami, most recently compiling a 4.45 ERA and 1.26 WHIP with 73 strikeouts over 58.2 innings in 64 appearances, including two starts, in 2023. The southpaw will now look to carve out a late-inning role with the Twins heading into his seventh major-league campaign.
Nick Gordon
Nick Gordon Loses arbitration case
Sat, Feb 10, 2024, 7:19 PM
Gordon will make $900,000 in 2024 after losing his arbitration case to the Twins on Saturday, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Gordon entered arbitration looking for $1.25 million. The outfielder had just 93 plate appearances last season due to suffering a right tibia fracture May 17. He nursed the injury for the rest of the season, which included a rehab assignment with Triple-A St. Paul.
Bubba Thompson
Bubba Thompson Removed from 40-man roster
Wed, Feb 7, 2024, 1:30 PM
Thompson was designated for assignment by the Twins on Wednesday, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Thompson was claimed off waivers by the Twins just last month, but his stay on the 40-man roster didn't last long. The 25-year-old speedster has slashed just .242/.286/.305 in 241 career major-league plate appearances.
Daniel Duarte
Daniel Duarte Designated for assignment
Wed, Feb 7, 2024, 1:28 PM
Duarte was designated for assignment by the Twins on Wednesday, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: The Twins did some 40-man roster shuffling and Duarte is one of the casualties. He was just claimed off waivers last week and will now go through the waiver process again.
Jordan Balazovic
Jordan Balazovic Jettisoned from 40-man roster
Wed, Feb 7, 2024, 1:26 PM
Balazovic was designated for assignment by the Twins on Wednesday, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: He's departing the 40-man roster in favor of Zack Weiss, who was claimed off waivers. Balazovic was once one of the Twins' best pitching prospects, but he didn't progress as hoped as a starter and his control has gotten worse since he was moved to relief full-time in 2023 with an 11.1 percent walk rate in the majors and 15.2 percent walk rate at Triple-A St. Paul.
Zack Weiss
Zack Weiss Lands in Minnesota
Wed, Feb 7, 2024, 1:21 PM
The Twins claimed Weiss off waivers from the Red Sox on Wednesday, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: The 31-year-old reliever holds a 4.61 ERA and 33:15 K:BB over 27.1 innings during his parts of three seasons in the big leagues. Weiss will compete for a middle relief job in Minnesota, but he does have options remaining.
